CompactPCI
Mezzanine Board Carriers
CompactPCI mezzanine board carriers are 3U or 6U CompactPCI boards that have
smaller special purpose daughter cards plugged into them. These carriers
provide access to hundreds of different kinds of I/O functions. Two popular,
standardized mezzanine formats are PMC and IndustryPack. PMC modules have
a PCI interface and are popular for functions needing high bus bandwidth,
such as video, Fibre Channel or ATM. IndustryPack modules, originated by Greenspring Computers are available
from dozens of manufacturers. Functions like analog and digital I/O, motion
control, T1/E1, and many types of communications interfaces are widely
available. The GRoupIPC web site has a good
listing of available PMC and IndustryPack modules. Another good place is
the web site of VME International Trade Association (VITA).
